Joyce Hurt Obituary

Joyce Ann (Crist) Hurt, 63, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 following a hard fought tough battle with lung cancer which metastasized to the bones. She did radiation and 3 rounds of chemo which was hard, and very painful for her. When it went to the liver, she said enough. We will live with cancer, not die of it, and we will do it one day at a time. No more chemo!

Her wish was to have Mayo Hospice help guide us, with comfort care, so she could be at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Joyce was born March 2, 1960, the daughter of Roy and Evelyn (Rubesch) Crist.

She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Hurt; her children: Amy Hall of Wheeler, Lisa (Brad) Traaseth of Birchwood and Benjamin “Ben” (Julie Schlender) Hurt of New Auburn; siblings, Carol (Ronald) Harel of Chippewa Falls, Christine (William) Zwadlo of Chetek, Gilbert (Merrie) Crist of Chippewa Falls, Terry Crist of Washington state, and Charles Crist of New Auburn; grandchildren, Jasmine Hall, Isabelle Hall, and Jordan Hall, Trenton Miller, Audrey Traaseth, and Emma Traaseth, and Carter (Poirer) Hurt; and further survived by many in-laws that she loved dearly.

After graduating from Chippewa Falls Senior High School with her bestie, Carolyn (Keke) Lanners, Joyce worked in the computer printed circuit industry at Cray Research, and then Spectrum Industries, and ended her working career with 20 plus years with Walmart of Rice Lake.

She loved being around the baby calves on her and Jim’s small Hereford cattle ranch.

She also found great joy in the yearly Hayward camping trips with family and friends. Joyce and her sister, Carol always took time to enjoy the chocolate making places. The lumberjack competitions were also a great time for Joyce. She always looked forward to hitting the casino with her sister, Chris. They never got rich at it though.

Joyce had the cutest giggly little laugh that made me smile whenever I heard it. She made awesome chicken dumpling soup, and her dumplings, pork and sauerkraut were also a favorite.

Joyce is loved and will be terribly missed by all of us.

We know the Lord took her for a reason, and she is no longer dealing with the horrific pain, she endured gracefully. Joyce wanted to express a special thank you to Mayo, and Mayo Hospice Comfort Care. They are a wonderful team that really does care. Also, a thank you to Horan Funeral Home for helping our family through a very difficult time.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Patricia “Patty” M. Crist; niece, Sheila M. Harel; and many aunts, uncles and friends that were very special to Joyce.

A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17 at the Horan Funeral Home in Chippewa Falls. Pastor Jed Watson will be officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17 at the funeral home.

Following the services, there will be a Celebration of Life at Bresina’s Hometown Bar and Grill in Tilden from Noon until 5 p.m.
